Six Year 10 and 11 students recently took part in the Dukes Sustainable Engineering Workshop, one of the many enriching opportunities available to LPS Clapham students thanks to being part of the Dukes Education family. Bringing together students from schools across the Dukes network, the workshop encouraged participants to think creatively about some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges while gaining valuable insight into careers in engineering, innovation and sustainable design.
Throughout the day, students explored how engineering can be used to develop practical solutions to real-world sustainability issues. They designed, built and tested their own wind turbines, applying scientific and engineering principles in a hands-on setting, before hearing from an industry expert with experience in the electric vehicle sector about the role innovation is playing in creating a greener future.
Students also took part in a sustainability innovation challenge focused on reducing litter and plastic pollution in Indonesia. Working collaboratively, they developed and presented solutions to the problem, drawing on both environmental and engineering principles while strengthening their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills.
The workshop provided a fascinating insight into the many ways engineers are helping to shape a more sustainable world. From renewable energy and transportation to product design and environmental innovation, students were encouraged to consider how their own skills and interests could contribute to addressing the challenges of the future.
As well as exploring sustainability in practice, students benefited from the opportunity to collaborate with peers from across the Dukes Education network, broadening their perspectives and sharing ideas with like-minded students from other schools.
Experiences such as this help students connect classroom learning with real-world applications, while providing valuable exposure to future study and career pathways. Through engagement with industry professionals and specialist programmes, students gain a deeper understanding of how their interests today could translate into meaningful opportunities in the future.
We are delighted that our students were able to take part in such an engaging and thought-provoking event and look forward to seeing how the ideas and inspiration gained from the workshop influence their future studies and aspirations.
