Bringing Ancient Greek Mythology to Life in the Heart of London

What better way to study Ancient Greece than to encounter its myths and legends in the middle of modern London?

As part of our Learn Like a Londoner programme, Year 7 students recently travelled to Piccadilly Circus to visit one of London’s most recognisable landmarks – the statue of Eros. The visit formed part of their History studies exploring how the Ancient Greeks used myths and gods to explain the world around them.

Rather than simply learning about mythology from a textbook, students were able to engage with a real monument, observing it closely and considering what it reveals about the enduring influence of the ancient world. Armed with sketchbooks and their growing historical knowledge, they examined the statue’s wings, bow and arrows, discussing what these features might tell us about the figure it represents and the messages it was designed to convey.

The visit encouraged students to think like historians. Drawing on their classroom learning, they compared Eros with other Greek gods and goddesses they had studied, including Zeus, Athena and Poseidon, exploring how mythology shaped the beliefs and culture of Ancient Greece.

Back in school, students applied their understanding by creating tourist information cards explaining who Eros was and why a figure from Greek mythology still stands at the centre of one of London’s busiest public spaces. The quality of their work demonstrated not only strong historical understanding but also genuine curiosity and creativity.

Experiences like this are a key part of our approach to learning. Research shows that students develop deeper understanding when they can connect classroom knowledge with real-world experiences. By stepping beyond the classroom and into the city itself, students are able to see how history, culture and ideas continue to shape the world around them.

For Year 7, the visit provided a memorable reminder that London’s streets, monuments and public spaces can be powerful learning resources. It also highlighted one of the unique advantages of studying in the capital: having access to world-class educational opportunities on our doorstep.

At LPS Mayfair, we want students to see learning everywhere they look. Through programmes such as Learn Like a Londoner, lessons do not end when students leave the classroom. Instead, the city itself becomes part of their education.
