Black History Month: Celebrating Stories, Voices and Representation

From poetry and quizzes to new diverse reads, students embraced Black History Month through creativity and reflection.

LPS Clapham marked Black History Month with a vibrant and thought-provoking series of events celebrating black voices, creativity, and history.
Students enjoyed themed lunches celebrating African heritage, a whole-school quiz, and an inspiring assembly by Mr Hussain on the origins and importance of the month.
A creative writing competition brought forward powerful spoken-word pieces and short stories that explored identity and belonging.
The English and Humanities departments also launched a new partnership with Moon Lane Ink, an independent bookshop in Catford championing representation and diversity in children’s publishing.

“The books have flown off the shelves,” said Mrs Leigh Riley, Co-ordinator for English and Humanities. “It’s wonderful to see students so enthusiastic about reading inclusive and inspiring stories.”

This celebration embodied LPS Clapham’s belief that diverse stories deepen understanding, empathy, and connection.
