On Friday 16 May and Monday 18 May, the Geography department took Y12 students to Southend-On-Sea to investigate Coastal Processes and Coastal Management.
The aims of the day were to investigate the Beach Profiles by using Clinometers, Longshore Drift by measuring depths along Groynes and Sediment Size by measuring the long axis of a range of pebbles across the beach.
Students also evaluated a range of Coastal Management Techniques e.g. Sea Walls and Rip-Raps and spoke to many local residents about their own personal views and opinions as they conducted questionnaires.
On a beautifully sunny day by the coast, the students were thoroughly involved in their investigations and completed the work with much enthusiasm, efficiency and organisation. It was great to see the students challenge their ‘thinking skills’, experience learning in an ‘outdoor classroom’ context and gain valuable information for their Paper 1 of their final examination and NEA projects.
A big thank you to Mrs West for organising two superb fieldwork days, with the support of Miss Dengel and Mr Lobo.
