A Level Options

London Pathways

At LPS Sixth we don’t talk about A Level options or subject choices but instead, focus on helping students to take the right options to prepare for the types of work which most interest them and the right subjects to maximise their chances of success for university.

We group A level options into ‘London Pathways’. These are blocks of A Levels grouped around specific career pathways and are designed to help students make the best choices to maximise success in the areas in which they are most interested.

We take the time to understand your hopes and ambitions, strengths and weaknesses and your aspirations for the future so that you can select the right pathways – and thence the right A Levels to help you move on to the next stage with confidence.

There are six London Pathways, each of which offers a different set of A Level subject options:

  • Medical
  • Humanities
  • Engineering
  • Business
  • Creative
  • Inter-Disciplinary

This combination of career-focused pathways enables us to offer 400+ combinations of subjects so that we can cover the majority of  choices.

How many A Levels should I choose?

Students typically choose three A levels, one from each block, with the possibility of a fourth A Level.

At interview stage, we hold an in-depth discussion with every student to ensure that they make the right choice of Pathway and A level choices to put them on the right track for their future university and chosen career.

In addition to A levels, we encourage students to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which is highly respected by universities.  We complement all of this with a strong enrichment programme that includes trips, speakers, Duke of Edinburgh, model UN, careers advice, work experience, mentoring and leadership opportunities and other activities that are designed to stretch and stimulate critical thinking.

The EPQ

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is an optional addition in Year 12 – but a strongly recommended option. This is because excellent grades are no longer enough. Universities now often require evidence of a students’ ability to study independently, push themselves academically and proactively develop new skills.

The EPQ at LPS Sixth allows students to choose any subject that is relevant to their future studies, career or personal interests. This qualification improves skills in research, presentation, public speaking, writing, communication and independent study. Students have weekly sessions with a supervisor to discuss their progress.
